Some men express their love through gifts of chocolates, teddy bears, or flowers, but not this talented Tejano musician. Freddie Records artist Lucky Joe wrote his then-girlfriend, and now wife, Devin Banda-Eguia, a song.

“Mi Guerita,” which fits as Devin is cute, tiny, and blonde, is nominated for Song of the Year at the 43rd annual Tejano Music Awards coming up on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, at the Boeing Center at Tech Port in San Antonio.

“So, I wrote her that song and it just took off,” Lucky Joe said, during an Oct. 9 interview with Tejano Nation. “Since the time of its release, it’s been doing awesome.”

Lucky Joe admits his labor of love, “Mi Guerita,” faces some stiff competition in its category. The other nominees include “Ahora Que Ya Eres Feliz” by Isabel Marie Sanchez, “Infraganti” by Monica Saldivar, “Necesito Odiarte” by Jay Perez, and “Quedate Con El” by Stefani Montiel.

“We’re going up against a lot of great, great talented artists with great songs,” Lucky Joe said. “So, best of luck to all the nominees. Hopefully, we’ll come away with a win.”

Love is the true winner in this story as Lucky Joe and Devin Banda, also a recording artist tied the knot in early September in true Las Vegas style and without telling anybody.

“We just planned it out to where we went to Vegas and we did the whole traditional, The Little White Chapel in Vegas,” Lucky Joe said. “And, no, we didn’t get married by Elvis. It was a regular preacher. It was beautiful.”

As for how the two well-known Tejano music figures will handle the public’s scrutiny regarding their union, Lucky Joe said he isn’t worried and takes the approach to just focus on his life and not what others around him may be saying that is negative or critical.

“We try not to listen to a lot of the judgments, a lot of the comments,” Lucky Joe said. “We’ve already gotten them. We’re used to it. It really doesn’t phase us.”

Lucky Joe prefers to focus on his fans and fans in the San Antonio area during Tejano Music Awards weekend can catch him in concert.

Although Lucky Joe could not perform at this year’s 43rd Annual Tejano Music Awards due to a previous, private engagement, he does invite fans to the TMA pre-party on Friday, Oct. 20, 2023, at Smoke Texas Downtown, 501 E. Crockett, in San Antonio, where he will open for Grupo Siggno. Lucky Joe will also premiere the video, which he’s filming for his collaboration with Siggno frontman Jesse Turner, called, “Pa’ Que No Te Cuenten.”

Watch the interview with Lucky Joe for more about the couple’s wedding, including the significance of the exact time of their marriage, how they handle the competitiveness as two vocalists in the same industry, and if they ever plan to record a duet together.

For now, keep your ears open for Lucky Joe’s latest chart-topping singles that include: “Pa’ Que No Te Cuenten,” “Te Marque,” and of course, the love song, “Mi Guerita.”
